HTTP (Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol) is a more user friendly form of communication than FTP. It allows you to view pictures and links in a "point and click" interface. FTP is designed for downloading files. It has some features that make it much better for downloading files than with HTTP but it is not as pretty. Using FTP, is a lot like making my hard drive (the server hard drive) look like it is connected directly to your computer. When you connect by FTP, you will see a list of folders(called directories) and files which are on my hard drive. You can explore the files/folders on my drive and then transfer them to you your drive. Here is the "step by step" for CuteFTP. Most serious downloaders prefer BulletProof FTP, but I don't have a "step by step" for that program written yet. Once you have done CuteFTP, you can usually figure out BulletProof without help. It is very similar. Connecting to the ADS using CuteFTP Step 1: Install the program and run it. Step 2 (The CuteFTP windows and starting the Site manager): Overview The main program window for the CuteFTP program might say "Not connected Cute FTP 4.0" in the title bar. It will have 4 child windows inside of it. The first window is long and narrow at the top. This is the Connection window. The next two windows are side by side beneath this first window. These are the directory windows. The 4th window is long and narrow and it is located below the two directory windows. This is the Queue window. The directory window on the left may have a directory tree in it. If it does, that directory tree is _your_ hard drive. The directory window on the right, may have a directory in it. If it does, this is the directory of the _server's_ hard drive. The "Site Manager" dialog box has some text boxes on the right and a folder tree in the left hand side. It might say "site manager" in the title bar. I believe that the site manager dialog box loads by default when the program starts. Starting the Site manager When you start the CuteFTP program will have one of two things happen. (A). You will have the Site Manager start automatically. This window will be displayed over the top of the main program window. In this case go directly to Step 3. (B). The site manager will not start. In that case you will see the CuteFTP program's main window only. In order to log in, you need to load the Site manager. To do that click on the button in the tool bar that looks like a book. It is on the top left. If you don't have a button on the tool bar that looks like a book you can open the "site manager" from the "file" menu. Step 3 (Creating a site "bookmark" for the ADS using the site manager): Overview The site manager is a lot like the «Bookmarks» of Netscape and «Favorites» of Internet Explorer. It stores the address of sites as does your web browser, but it also stores other important features of the site that are not required for web browsers. First it stores the login and the password. Second, it stores information about how to log into the site. For example, some of the FTP servers on the ADS network, use a port different than the standard port (21). Another detail that is stored for each site tells the program what to do if you aren't successful in logging in the first time. You can program Cute FTP to try to log in every so often automatically. This is an important feature of Cute FTP because most people have to try hundreds of time before they are successful. (Why do you have to try so many times? Because the server can only talk to 9 people at once. Some servers can only talk to 5 or even 3. Others can talk to 20. it all depends on bandwidth of that server. Once the allotted number are logged in, every one else will get a "too many users" error until there is a slot open). The first time you connect to a site you need to fill in some of these details. If you have already created the site you want to connect to, then you can go directly to Step 4. Creating a "bookmark" site for the ADS Part 3a: Click the «new site» button on the site manager dialog box. Part 3b: Change the name of the site to ADS or Anime Download Site or whatever you can remember. Part 3c: Fill in the «Host address» text field with animedownload.net (Do not put "ftp" or anything else. Just animedownload.net and nothing else. Part 3d: Fill in the login and the password with ads and ads (lower case). Part 3e: Make sure that the «login type» radio button is set to Normal. Part 3f: Click the «Edit» button. Then click on the «Advanced» tab. Part 3g: In the Advanced tab set the «connection retries» to 500. This determines how many times your computer will try to log in to my computer before it gives up. You can set it to anything you want really, but 500 is a nice number. Next set the «Delay between retries» to 60. This tells the computer to delay for 60 seconds between each retry. WARNING! some computers will ban you if you try to log on too frequently. The ADS main site uses 60 seconds as the cut off, but some mirrors may use 120 seconds. Usually the login message will tell you this the first time you log in. Click «OK». You will be returned to the Site manager. Part 3h: You now have a new site added in your site manager. You do not need to set up this site again. It will be here the next time you run the program. You may want to set up additional sites for my mirrors. To do this, follow the instructions above and substitute the correct Host address in Part 3c. That is, use something like mirror2.animedownload.net or mirror10.animedownload.net and so on. To make your connection you can double click on the site, or select the site and click the «connect» button. The computer will try to connect to the site. You will probably get a message telling you that it failed to log in. This because of the "too many users" most likely. If you get a different error, you should report it to me. Step 4 - Connecting from the Site manager: Select the site you want to connect to from the folder tree on the left hand side of the site manager. Make sure that the login and password are correct. Click the connect button. You will see some information appearing in the top window. This is all the information that is passing between your computer (the client program) and the program on my computer (the server software). You may also get a pop up window that welcomes you to the server. read this information. It may have information about how frequently you can make your "retry" attempts (see Part 3g). If you do not connect the top window will have a line like "waiting to try again" in the top window. The computer will try again to connect after the retry delay has elapsed. If you do connect you will see two directory trees in the two windows in the middle of the screen. The directory tree in the right hand side of the main window is the HDD of the server. The directory tree on the left hand window is the directory of your own computer. Once you are connected, you can drag files from one directory to the other. It will take time for the files to transfer! You will see statistics about how fast the file is transferring at the bottom of the screen. Troubleshooting Cute FTP (don't contact me without reading this) If you are unable to connect, try changing the login/password to view/only. If that works, but you are unable to log in with login/password = ads/ads, then you are probably getting the "too many users" error when you log in with login/password ads/ads. Look for it in the top window. This is normal. I only allow a certain number of people to log on at a time. If you are unable to download once you are connected, then you are probably using the login/password = view/only. This login is only for seeing what files are on the server and to confirm that the other parameters are set correctly. The view/only password can also be set up to configure the queue. For more information on using the queue in CuteFTP see the on-line help in that program. If your top window hangs with a statement like "waiting for welcome message" or "timed out" then it is probably because you have set the "retry delay" to a value that is too low for the server and you have been banned. Usually this is not permanent. Reset the retry delay as described in Part 3g, and try to connect again later.
